Wellness Care

Is your pet truly getting the most out of life?

Because our animal companions are only with us for a precious amount of time, staying on top of their ongoing health is critical. The best way to achieve a long, happy life is by making a commitment to wellness care. These routine visits allow us to manage your pet’s current health and take steps necessary to extend the number of quality years you spend together.

What is wellness care?

Similar to the annual checkups you have with your own doctor, wellness visits are regular appointments through which we monitor your pet’s ongoing health. The doctor will spend time examining your pet, checking for any signs of a potential problem. Your companion’s eyes, ears, nose, mouth, skin and coat will be evaluated. Then, the vet will listen to your pet’s heart and lungs, and conduct various other tests to assess his or her internal wellbeing.

Wellness visits are also an excellent opportunity for us to take certain proactive measures that will protect your pet from common illnesses and diseases. For instance, we will develop an individualized vaccination plan based on your companion’s lifestyle and risk factors. We will also discuss other preventative techniques, such as the right diet, appropriate physical activity, parasite control and more. All of this will help keep your loved one fit, safe and happy.

Should our examination reveal the signs of a health concern, we will develop a plan for addressing the problem as quickly and effectively as possible. This is an important component of wellness care, because when we can identify medical issues early, we can vastly improve the prognosis for your pet. In fact, early detection of disease can actually add years to your furry friend’s life.

Lastly, routine visits provide a chance for all of us to become familiar and get to know each other on a personal level. You will feel comfortable asking questions and discussing your concerns, and your pet will feel more relaxed and at ease with us. We believe that establishing a rapport with one another goes a long way toward improving the quality of the care we provide. The more we understand your pet’s unique needs, the better we will be able to meet those needs over the years.

Allergies & Dermatology

Have you noticed your furry friend scratching more than usual lately?

Skin problems can become much more than just a minor nuisance to your pet. With symptoms that range from minor itchiness to outright pain, dermatological issues can negatively impact your pet’s quality of life. The good news is, with the right partner you can help your loved one overcome those external health issues once and for all.

The team at St. Mina Animal Hospital is skilled in all aspects of pet dermatology. We can determine exactly what’s causing your pet’s skin reactions and develop a treatment strategy that will get results.

Diagnosis

There are a number of techniques that can be used to pinpoint the cause of pet skin problems. We’ll start with the basics and work our way through the various options until we have the answers we need. Some of the many dermatological issues we have experience with include:

  • Allergies
  • Infections
  • Dermatitis
  • Parasites
  • Ear Infections
  • Foot Disease
  • Hormonal Disorders
  • Autoimmune Diseases
  • Tumors
  • Skin Cancer

Treatment

Once we’ve successfully diagnosed the condition, the next step is developing an effective treatment plan to help bring your pet some relief. We utilize a number of different strategies, either independently or in combination, to achieve the best possible outcome. Depending on the diagnosis, we may recommend the use of topical cream, medications, supplements or therapy. In advanced situations, surgery may be necessary to combat the problem. Our treatment recommendations will be completely tailored to your companion’s condition, severity and a number of other unique factors.

Allergy Care

Managing allergies can be somewhat complicated, but we’re up for the task! We will begin by identifying exactly what factors are triggering your pet’s reactions. This will help us to determine what type of allergy we are dealing with: either food or environmental. From there, we will come up with a plan to effectively reduce and/or eliminate symptoms altogether. While allergies cannot always be cured, we can develop an ongoing treatment strategy that will help improve your pet’s quality of life.

If you suspect your loved one may be experiencing a problem with his or her skin, coat, ears or feet, contact us right away!

Nutritional Counseling

Are you confident about your pet’s diet and exercise level?

As your pet’s caretaker, it’s your job to do what it takes to keep that little guy or gal healthy and happy. One of the easiest ways to achieve this goal is through a balanced diet and the appropriate amount of physical activity.

Of course, knowing this and actually putting it into practice are two entirely different things. That’s where we can help. Our team understands the complexities surrounding companion animal nutrition and weight management. More importantly, we can make handling this aspect of your pet’s care easy and effective.

The Important Role of Nutrition

The first step is figuring out what your pet’s unique needs are. Your pet is special and, as such, may require a completely different nutritional balance than another animal. This is especially true for pets that have existing medical conditions, such as arthritis and diabetes. We want to help your loved one maximize his or her wellness. We can achieve this goal by developing an individualized diet plan that is tailored just for him or her.

As part of the process, we will evaluate your companion’s lifestyle, risk factors and a number of other elements, including breed, age and current weight. This will help us to pinpoint what food products would be the best fit for your pet, as well as how much to feed and how often.

The Weight Debate

There is arguably nothing cuter than a chubby dog or cat. Unfortunately, pet obesity is a serious problem that could potentially shorten your loved one’s life. Conversely, animals who don’t weigh as much as they should are at a greater risk of becoming sick or injured. The second component of our strategy will be determining what weight range would be healthiest for your pet and how to best achieve that goal.

Just like with humans, the healthier and more fit your pet is, the longer and happier a life he or she will enjoy. We’d love to get you both on the right path. All it takes is one visit. Give us a call today to schedule a professional nutrition and weight management analysis.

Dentistry

Is your pet’s mouth as healthy as it could be?

A clean, bright smile is just as important to your pet as it is to you. In fact, healthy teeth and gums can even extend and improve the quality of your loved one’s life. Because your pet cannot brush his or her own teeth, it’s up to us to take on this important role. That’s why St. Mina Animal Hospital offers both routine and advanced pet dentistry services.

Regular dental cleanings are essential for maintaining your pet’s oral health and preventing dental disease. In order to care for your pet’s teeth, we must place him or her under anesthesia. This helps to protect your pet and our staff members and make the entire process safer and more effective. All patients are carefully tested beforehand to ensure that they are healthy enough to be sedated.

Our dental cleanings are very thorough. We begin with a comprehensive exam, through which we will note any teeth that are missing, loose or require extraction. During this process, we also examine the mouth for abscesses, masses or other abnormalities.

After fully assessing your pet’s oral health, a technician will use a high speed dental scaler to remove plaque and bacteria from the teeth. Once this is completed, your pet’s teeth will be polished using a mint-flavored paste. Polishing creates a slick surface on the teeth that protects them from plaque build-up. The last step of a dental cleaning involves applying a sealant to your pet’s teeth, which serves to temporarily protect newly cleaned teeth from bacteria.

Once the dental procedure is complete, we will call you with an update and explain the doctor’s findings. We will also go over home care instructions. Meanwhile, your pet will be closely monitored throughout the day to ensure he or she is recovering from the procedure well.

Antibiotics and pain medications may be sent home, depending on the severity of plaque present and whether or not any teeth were removed. We will also help you create a home dental care plan to maintain your pet’s clean, fresh mouth. This plan will involve daily brushing of your pet’s teeth and may also include the use of dental hygiene chews and tartar control treats.

Whether it’s a simple cleaning or complex oral surgery, we’ll do whatever it takes to protect your pet’s smile. Let’s help your companion beat the odds and enjoy a lifetime of good oral health.

Diagnostics

Does your pet seem to be feeling a little under the weather but you’re not really sure why?

If our pets could speak, it would be much easier to manage their health. They could simply tell us what was bothering them and we could treat the problem accordingly. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. At St. Mina Animal Hospital, we believe it’s our duty to be the voice for those creatures who cannot speak for themselves. That’s why we’ve invested so much into our diagnostic services.

Our hospital is outfitted with modern equipment to help us stay one step ahead of your pet’s medical needs. Should a routine exam reveal a potential health concern, we can quickly run any necessary tests in our on-site diagnostic laboratory. This allows us to get the answers we need in a timely manner so we can address the situation most effectively.

Beyond lab work, we also have access to a number of advanced imaging techniques, which we can use when an external exam isn’t sufficient. Radiology, or x-ray imaging, allows us to assess the bones and internal organs to identify injury and signs of illness. What’s more, because the technology we use is digital, it is much safer for your pet. Results can be quickly evaluated and shared via email if a second opinion is needed.

Should your pet’s needs warrant the advice or opinion of a veterinary specialist, we are happy to provide referrals. We will work closely with these experts to ensure that your pet continues to receive the highest level of care.

If your companion hasn’t been feeling quite like him or herself lately, don’t take chances – give us a call. Whether it’s a routine blood test or advanced x-ray imaging, we’ll get to the bottom of the problem once and for all. When it comes to managing your loved one’s wellbeing, we’ve got you covered!

Boarding

Need someone to care for your pet on your next vacation or business trip?

We know you’d love to bring your pet along with you every time you leave town. We also know this isn’t always possible. To ensure that your loved one always receives the best care when you’re away, St. Mina Animal Hospital is pleased to offer full service boarding. Our guests are pampered with comfortable bedding, deluxe accommodations, lots of exercise and plenty of affection from our caring staff. Meanwhile, you can enjoy the peace of mind of traveling without having to worry about your pet.

At St. Mina Animal Hospital, we feed Hill’s Science Diet specific for intestinal health (I/d). Of course, you are more than welcome to bring your pet’s special food if you prefer. All guests are kept in separate living quarters, unless you would prefer to keep two or more of your pets in the same enclosure. Dogs are taken outside to use the bathroom 2 or 3 times daily (depending on weather). All animals in our care will remain under close supervision. This ensures a safe, enjoyable stay for everyone. Your pet can also be bathed just prior to discharge at very reasonable rate.

Boarding guests are expected to be up to date on vaccinations and current on their flea and tick prevention upon the start of their stay. A complimentary physical examination is performed on all pets upon their arrival to further ensure the optimum health and safety of our guests. An additional fee will be assessed if your pet needs to be bathed or given flea prevention.

Additional Boarding Requirements:

  • All pets must be current on the following vaccines:
  • If pets are not vaccinated, vaccines will be administered upon their arrival to our hospital at the owner’s expense.
    • Dogs – Annual Rabies, Canine Distemper, Parvo, Influenza vaccine, and biannual Bordetella vaccines.
    • Cats – Annual Rabies, Feline Distemper and Feline Leukemia
  • All pets will be checked for fleas and ticks and if necessary will be treated immediately at an additional charge in order to prevent transmission of diseases to other guests.
  • In cases of emergency, owners will be contacted ASAP. The doctor may recommend specific diagnostic testing and treatments. If approved by the owner, an extra charge will be added to the bill.
  • You may bring any toys, bedding or other items that will make your pet feel more at home. We encourage you to label all items with your pet’s name and your last name using a marker.
  • Guests are admitted into and discharged from our hospital during normal business hours only.
  • If your pet is taking medication, please include a detailed note so that we can administer them accordingly (extra charge will be applied).

Although we have great boarding services here at St. Mina Animal Hospital, we are not staffed 24/7. If your pet requires special care such as overnight walking or round-the-clock medication, we recommend calling Dawn Diaz with Country Club Critter Sitters. Her facility is staffed to handle pets with these types of special needs. Please contact Dawn at (817) 453-2093 or (817) 829-8655 or check her website atwww.countryclubcrittersitters.com.

Let us take some of the stress and worry out of traveling without your companion. Contact us today to schedule your pet’s next boarding stay!
